Friedrich is the most important painter of German Romanticism and lived mostly in Dresden. As a boy he saw his younger brother drown trying to save him, a trauma that may lie behind the solitude and meditation on death in his work.

His paintings often show figures seen from behind, gazing at fog, moonlight or ruins, turning landscape into spiritual meditation. Forgotten after his death, he was rediscovered in the early twentieth century.
