Once Impressionism was established, a number of painters went their separate ways. They never formed a group, but none was content simply to record visual impressions. Cézanne sought the solid geometry beneath nature; Seurat rebuilt pictorial order with scientific ; Gauguin travelled to Tahiti in search of primal symbols; Van Gogh poured out emotion in swirling strokes and intense colour.

The term “Post-Impressionism” was coined by the English critic Roger Fry in 1910. Most of these artists struggled during their lifetimes, yet they paved the way for Fauvism, Cubism and Expressionism. Van Gogh's The Starry Night belongs to this period.
