Born into modest circumstances, Watteau worked as a young man painting theatre scenery in Paris, and was deeply influenced by the Italian commedia dell'arte and the work of Rubens.

The fête galante he invented shows elegant couples at play in parkland, light yet tinged with melancholy. He suffered from tuberculosis and died at thirty-six.
