Titian was the greatest painter of the Venetian school. He trained under Giovanni Bellini and worked alongside Giorgione. Venetian painters valued over drawing, and Titian took that tradition to its height, rendering flesh and fabric in rich layers of colour and warm light.
His patrons included the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and Philip II of Spain, and his fame spread across Europe. In old age his brushwork grew ever looser — he is said sometimes to have painted with his fingers — deeply influencing Rubens, Velázquez and Rembrandt.
