Trained in the academic tradition and a devoted admirer of Ingres, Degas took part in most of the Impressionist exhibitions, yet he called himself a realist and disliked painting outdoors.

He painted ballet dancers, racehorses and laundresses, with off-centre, cropped compositions influenced by Japanese prints and photography. As his eyesight failed he turned increasingly to pastel and sculpture.
