Life
1776–1837
Birthplace
East Bergholt, Suffolk, England

The son of a mill owner, Constable spent his life painting the Stour valley where he grew up. “I should paint my own places best,” he wrote.

He made many oil sketches outdoors and was fascinated by clouds. Recognition in England came slowly, but his work was acclaimed at the Paris Salon and inspired the French Barbizon painters.
