Rembrandt is the greatest painter of the Dutch Golden Age. He found fame quickly in Amsterdam and never lacked portrait commissions, but extravagance and changing tastes led to bankruptcy in later life.

He made nearly a hundred self-portraits, from confident youth to weathered old age, without flattery. His mastery of light and his insight into human nature keep his work moving today.
