Morisot came from a prosperous bourgeois family and studied painting with her sister Edma, receiving guidance from the landscape painter Corot. A founding member of the Impressionists, she showed in seven of their eight exhibitions, missing only the year her daughter was born.

She was Manet's friend and model and later married his brother Eugène. Since women could not freely frequent cafés and public places, she painted homes, gardens and women's lives, known for her light, transparent brushwork.
