Born into a farming family, Millet moved in 1849 to Barbizon on the edge of the Forest of Fontainebleau to escape cholera and political unrest in Paris, joining the Barbizon school.

He painted peasant labour with solemn dignity, and conservatives accused him of socialist propaganda. Van Gogh revered him and made more than twenty copies after his work.
