A child prodigy, Millais became the youngest student ever admitted to the Royal Academy Schools, at eleven. In 1848 he founded the with Rossetti and Holman Hunt, seeking the sincerity of art before Raphael and rebelling against academic convention with bright colour and minute observation of nature.

His later style became more popular in appeal; he grew into one of the richest and best-loved painters of the Victorian age, was made a baronet, and became President of the Royal Academy in the year of his death.
