Birthplace
Grasse, France
Periods
Rococo

Fragonard studied with Boucher and won the Prix de Rome to study in Italy. He could have become an academic history painter, but chose instead to paint light, romantic subjects for private collectors.

His brushwork is quick and his colour radiant; he is the defining painter of late Rococo. After the Revolution his style was seen as a relic of the old regime, and he died poor and forgotten.
