Life
1450–1516
Birthplace
's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands

Bosch spent almost his whole life in his home town of 's-Hertogenbosch, from which he took his name. He came from a family of painters and belonged to a local religious brotherhood.

His paintings teem with grotesque creatures, human–animal hybrids and bizarre structures, using wild fantasy to depict sin and salvation. Scholars have argued over their meaning for five centuries, and the Surrealists claimed him as a forerunner.
